In TikTok blackout challenge, participants are urged to choke themselves until they pass out from a lack of oxygen.

The “blackout challenge” has been around since at least 2008, although it just recently returned to TikTok in 2021. Experts have advised against trying the trend, which has in the past resulted in more than 80 deaths, according to the CDC.

Last year, two girls died while attempting the popular “Blackout Challenge” on TikTok; as a result, their parents are suing the social media platform.

According to her relatives, Arriani Jaileen Arroyo suffocated to death on February 26, 2021, after attempting the contentious challenge in which participants strangle themselves until they pass out on social media. Nine years old was she.

Heriberto Arroyo Roman and Christal Arroyo Roman have recently filed a lawsuit against TikTok, claiming that the platform’s algorithm was created to “always be relevant, push ‘TikTok Challenges’ to young users to improve their engagement and maximize TikTok’s earnings.”

Following Arriani’s death in February 2021 from the blackout challenge, her parents are suing Social medias in an effort to protect future children and prevent a similar tragedy, according to the family’s attorney Matthew Bergman, as reported by Wisconsin radio station WTMJ.

Lalani’s family said in the complaint, according the Times, that she started seeing the “Blackout Challenge” in July of the following year as a result of Tiktok’s algorithm.

While traveling with her family for 20 hours by vehicle, she watched footage of the challenge. Lalani’s stepmother discovered her shortly after arriving home “hanging from her bed with a rope around her neck.”

According to the filing, when police searched Lalani’s phone, they found that she had watched videos of the challenge “on repeat” and thought she would become famous if she uploaded a video of herself doing it.
