About Teenage Dirtbag

The American rock band Wheatus has a song called “Teenage Dirtbag.” It was released on June 20, 2000, as the album’s first single under their own name (2000).

Brendan B. Brown, a guitarist and singer, was inspired to write the song by a memory from his youth.

According to Wikipedia[4],

“Teenage Dirtbag” is about a childhood experience that guitarist and vocalist Brendan B. Brown had. In a 2012 interview with Tone Deaf, he said:

It came from the summer of 1984 on Long Island, when I was 10 years old. That summer in the woods behind my house, there was a Satanic, drug-induced ritual teen homicide that went down;

and the kid who did it was called Ricky Kasso, and he was arrested wearing an AC/DC T-shirt.

That made all the papers, and the television, obviously; and here I was, 10 years old, walking around with a case full of AC/DC and Iron Maiden and Metallica – and all the parents and the teachers and the cops thought I was some kind of Satan worshipper.

So that’s the backdrop for that song.

Teenage Dirtbag Song Lyrics

[Harry]
Her name is Noel
I have a dream about her
She rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn’t know who I am
And she doesn’t give a damn about me

[All]
‘Cause I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby
I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden baby with me

[Niall]
Her boyfriend’s a dick
And he brings a gun to school
And he’d simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And drives an Iroc
But he doesn’t know who I am
And he doesn’t give a damn about me

[All]
‘Cause I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby
I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden baby with me

[Zayn]
Oh, yeah, dirtbag,
No, she doesn’t know what she’s missin’
Oh, yeah, dirtbag,
No, she doesn’t know what she’s missin’

[Louis]
Man, I feel like mold
It’s prom night and I am lonely
Low and behold
She’s walking over to me
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?

[Liam]
I’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don’t say, “Maybe.”
I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you

[All]
Oh, yeah dirtbag,
No, she doesn’t know what she’s missin’
Oh, yeah dirtbag,
No, she doesn’t know what she’s missin’
